Established in 1991, Cape Chamonix was originally part of the La Cotte Farm given to the French settlers in 1688. It has always had a reputation for the quality of its Chardonnay, due in part to the limestone soils located on the higher, most northern slopes of the crescent of mountains which encircle the Franschhoek valley. However since the arrival of young, German trained, Swellendam-born Gottfried Mocke in September 2001, the quality of their entire range has catapulted Chamonix to being, along with Boekenhoutskloof, a leading producer in the valley.

The hand disgorged Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique, made in tiny quantities, is an exemplar of the quality wine produced by this estate. The Pinot Noir from the highest vines on the farm, as cool a site as one could expect to find in Franschhoek, shows excellent fruit purity. There is a carefully crafted Bordeaux blend, Troika, which along with the rest of the Chamonix range, should be lauded for its low level of alcohol. The Chardonnay is elegant and finely-crafted and the Sauvignon Blanc balances fresh crisp fruit with the extra matter provided by some oak ageing. Many of these wines sell out on allocation, so to provide a more extensive offering we have added the Cape Chamonix Blanc to our portfolio.

Chamonix is the only cellar of any significance producing wine solely from its own grapes. The 50 hectare estate is moving over to organic viticulture. They aim to produce traditionally made wines that reflect the microclimate and soils of the farm. Gottfried is passionate about making wines that are classical in structure, displaying true individuality.
