Background
Vincent Morey set up his own domaine in 2006 (the first vintage was in 2007) with his wife Sophie, after his father, Bernard Morey, retired and split the family domaine between his two sons. Both Vincent and Sophie come from vine growing/winemaking families and share plenty of winemaking experience. Vincent studied at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune before completing work experience in Saint Emilion. In 1986 he returned to Chassagne and started working at the family domaine. It was in the same year the Sophie vinified her first vintage in Santenay at Ménager-Belland. Of their plantings Pinot Noir dominates with 60% of the surface area. Chardonnay makes up the majority of the remaining 40%, along with a little Aligoté. Currently, 60% of production is exported. Both Sophie and Vincent believe the quality and health of the fruit coming out of the vineyard is the key to the success of a vintage. As such the vines are farmed following the principles of lutte raisonnée, with preparations and treatments only being used when necessary and with a targeted approach. They feel that yields are best controlled by considered, thorough pruning and carry out their first pruning in November with a final stint in February/March. In addition, they practice debudding early in the growing season and as a result the vines usually require very little or no green harvesting. Leaf thinning is carried out later in the growing season, starting at the end of June – a task they feel is especially important for the ripening of Pinot Noir. They both believe that a willingness to be flexible in how you work in the vineyard is essential, particularly at harvest, when patience and timing of picking are crucial to the character and quality of the final wine. click here to download fiche in full Vineyard Holdings
